Casey Marion Smith, Sr.

Casey Marion Smith, Sr., 83, was born in Moorhead, Mississippi on April 4, 1929, and went to his heavenly home on March 4, 2013. He was the beloved husband of Joan (McIntire) Smith, whom he married in 1948.

Affectionately known as Marion, Dad, Poppa, Pop and Uncle Son, he was a benevolent husband, father, brother, grandfather, great grandfather and friend. He was known for his passion for Jesus Christ, faithfulness to his church, love for his family, zest for life and generosity toward his fellow man. He will long be remembered down-home spun humor, quick wit, and story-telling. He loved to collect antiques (said “he was one too” in later years) and enjoyed displaying his collection in “Poppas Country Museum.”

Marion moved to Choctaw County in 1942. He graduated from Ackerman High School in 1948 as the first student body president and was president of his senior class. He was a proud member of the 1947 Championship Football Team while playing the first game on the new Dale Davidson Football Field. Marion served two terms as Town Alderman and worked as Public Works Superintendent, Fire Chief, Deputy Marshall for eleven years and remained one of Ackerman and Choctaw County’s most avid ambassadors. Marion organized and directed the first Fire Department in Ackerman. He was founder and president emeritus of the annual Ackerman School Reunion.

Marion then established himself as an aspiring entrepreneur, having co-founded and managed several successful state-wide water works supply businesses. He was a member of the Ackerman Masonic Lodge #119 and the Gideon’s International. He retired in 1985 and his love for woodworking prompted him to establish his own business called “Poppas Country.” Poppa was a skilled master craftsman whose handiwork adorns many area households.  

Funeral services for Mr. Smith will be held on Thursday, March 7, 2013, 11:00 a.m. at Enon Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Ackerman, MS. Burial will follow in the Enon Cemetery.  Rev. Jerry Lawson will officiate the service. Visitation was held on Wednesday, March 6, 2013 from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Coleman Funeral Home in Ackerman.

Marion was preceded in death by his parents Casey Tripplett and Grace (Fondren); and his sister, Doris Withers.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Joan (McIntire) Smith o Ackerman, one son, Casey M. “Buddy” Smith, Jr. and his wife, Carol, of Tupelo, MS; one brother, Kenneth Smith and his wife, Bess, of Flowood, MS; grandchildren Casey Smith III and his wife, Mandy, and Stacey Fowler and her husband, Chip; grandchildren Casey Joe Fowler, Weston Fowler, Addie Grace Smith, and Lexie Rose Smith.

James Frank King

Funeral services for Mr. James Frank King, 62, were held at 11:00 a.m., January 27, 2014 at Coleman Funeral Home in Ackerman. Rev. Buddy Smith and Rev. Charles Rood officiated. Burial followed in South Union Cemetery near Ackerman.

A resident of Laurel, Mr. King was a pipeliner for years. He was also a member of Moss Baptist Church. He died Wednesday, January 22, 2014 at his residence in Laurel, Miss.

Survivors include mother Mae King of Ackerman, son Jim King of New Zealand, daughters Stacee Giers of Boca Raton, Fla., Bridgett Peacock of Laurel, brothers Mike King of Ackerman, Rusty King of Ackerman, sister Pam  Simpson of Ackerman, and four grandchildren.

Memorials may be sent to South Union Cemetery Fund.

Clara Foran

Mrs. Clara Foran died Sunday November 17, 2013 at Windsor Place In Columbus, MS. 

Mrs. Foran moved to Ackerman as a child and graduated from Ackerman High School with the Class of 1938. In 1940 Clara met Howard Foran who had recently finished seminary and was pastor of the First Presbyterian Church in Ackerman. Clara and Howard were maried for almost 57 years until Howard's death in 1997.

Rev. Foran was a chaplain in the U S Army and later the US Air Force and Clara accompanied him to Alaska and France and across the Southern U S as they took care of their growing family.

She leaves four daughters: Deborah Hill of Quitman, GA, Beverly (Ernest) Capozzoli of Troy, Al, Linda (Marshall) Smith of Panama City Beach, FL, and Nan (Mark) Bolin of Artesia, MS. She leaves 10 grandchildren, 17 great-grand children, and several nieces and nephews. Also sisters Ramona Weaver of West Point, Irene Biddle of Columbus, and sister-in-law Jean Stacy of Jackson.

Funeral services were held Wednesday November 20, 2013 at Coleman Funeral Home; interment followed in Enon Cemetery. The family request memorials be made to French Camp Academy.

Emmett W. Carr

Funeral services for Emmett W. Carr, 76, were held November 6, 2013 at Coleman Funeral Home in Ackerman, MS, with Rev. Guyton Montgomery officiating.

Mr. Carr attended Ackerman Church of Christ, a carpenter and served in the U.S. Navy. Mr. Carr was a resident of Choctaw County, MS and his birthday was April 15, 1937. He passed away at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Columbus, MS on November 3, 2013.

Survivors include son, Mark Bridges of Jackson; daughters, Amanda Benefield of Oklahoma City, OK, Cindy Lambert of Alexandria, TN; brother, Bill Carr of Ackerman; sisters, June Goodwin of Arkadelphia, Ark, Ann Martin of Harrison, Ark; seven grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.

William Floyd “Bill” Coleman

William Floyd “Bill” Coleman, Sr., 87, a retired butcher, passed away Monday September 30, 2013 at Pioneer Community Hospital of Choctaw County located in Ackerman, MS. 

Mr. Coleman was born November 29, 1925 in Marked Tree, Arkansas. He was a veteran of the United States Army, having served in World War II. Mr. Coleman was an avid CB operator for many years making many lifelong friends from all locations around the state of Mississippi. He was known to many by his radio handle, “Butcher Boy.” He was a member of Enon Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Ackerman, MS.

Funeral Services for Mr. Coleman will be held on Thursday, October 3, 2013 at 2PM at Coleman Funeral Home in Ackerman, MS. Interment will follow in the Enon Cemetery located next to the funeral home. Rev. Jerry Lawson and Rev. Danny Irvin will officiate. Visitation will be held Thursday October 3, 2013 from 12PM until Service Time at Coleman Funeral Home in Ackerman, MS. Coleman Funeral Home of Ackerman, MS is in charge of all arrangements.

Mr. Coleman is survived by his three sons, Keith Coleman and wife Ann, Jerry Coleman, and William F. “Billy” Coleman, Jr. , all of Ackerman, MS, a brother, Alvin Coleman and wife Vivian of Ackerman, MS, four grandchildren, Seana Bullock, Shane Coleman, Chris Coleman and wife Courtney, and Joel Coleman and wife Katie, and three great grandchildren, Seth Coleman and wife Janna, Tyson Coleman, and Marlee Coleman. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family.

Elvis L. Graves

Elvis L. Graves, lifetime resident of Ackerman, MS, passed away on September 14, 2013, at the age of 94.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Elizabeth Benson Graves.

Mr. Graves is survived by four children: Martha Schiffman (Robert), Nell Bowman (Bill), Benny Graves (Deanie), Kay McBee (Andy), eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Appreciation is expressed to devoted caregivers: Daisy Miller, Shirley Watts, and Comfort Keepers.

Mr. Graves was a graduate of Ackerman High School; Sunflower Junior College in Moorhead, Mississippi; and Mississippi State University with a degree in agronomy. Elvis was a veteran of World War II. He was in the Signal Corp and was a radio repairman for communication teams. His overseas service was in China and Burma.

Mr. Graves retired in 1982 as a feed microscopist from the State Chemical Lab at Mississippi State University. He had previously worked as a seed analyst for the State Seed Testing Lab.

He was an active member of Ackerman Baptist Church for 82 years, serving as a deacon and in many other capacities.

A celebration of life service will be held Tuesday, September 17, at 11 am at Ackerman Baptist Church. Memorials may be sent to the building fund at Ackerman Baptist Church, PO Box 277, Ackerman, MS 39735. Coleman Funeral Home of Ackerman is in charge of all arrangements.

Nettie M. Burchfield

Nettie M. Burchfield, 86, a former teacher, passed away Sunday August 4, 2013 at St. Dominic Hospital in Jackson, MS. Mrs. Burchfield was born January 27, 1927 in Winston County. She attended Ackerman Baptist Church in Ackerman, MS. Funeral Services for Mrs. Burchfield will be held on Wednesday August 7, 2013 at 10AM at Ackerman Baptist Church. Interment will follow in the Memorial Park Cemetery in Louisville, MS.

Mrs. Burchfield was preceded in death by her parents, James Harvey and Myrtle Bennett Myres, and a sister, Juanita Herrington.

She is survived by her husband of 64 years, J.D. Burchfield of Ackerman, MS, and sons, Phil Burchfield and wife Nita of Clinton, MS, Mike Burchfield and wife Patsy of Cleveland, MS, Tim Burchfield and wife Drenett of Pontotoc, MS, and grandchildren: John Burchfield and wife Lucie of Murfreesboro, TN, Jay Burchfield of Cleveland, MS and Teague Burchfield and wife Robyn of Clinton, MS, Jodie Burchfield of Jackson, MS. Collin Burchfield and Pierce Burchfield of Pontotoc, MS also survive her. She is also survived by five great grandchildren. The family requests memorials be made to the Ackerman Baptist Church.

Kathy Crowley McKnight

Kathy Crowley McKnight, 55, passed away on died Saturday, July 8, 2013, in San Antonio, TX after a short illness. Visitation will be Thursday, July 11 from 5-8 pm at Coleman Funeral Home. The funeral service will be held Friday, July 12, 2013 at 2 p.m. at Coleman Funeral Home in Ackerman, MS with Rev. Roger Griffith officiating. Interment will be at South Union Cemetery near Ackerman, MS.

Mrs. McKnight was a homemaker and a native of Ackerman, MS. She was a 1976 graduate of Ackerman High School.

Survivors include husband, Robbie McKnight of Ackerman, MS; son, Adam Bright of Ackerman, MS; daughter, Amanda Armstrong (Christopher) of Ackerman, MS; brother, Howard Crowley of Ackerman, MS; sisters, Margaret Crowley Kent and Sue Crowley Kyles both of Ackerman, MS; 6 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild.

Lottie Drexel Bright McClure

Funeral services for Lottie Drexel Bright McClure, 82, were held on July 6, 2013 at 11 a.m. at Chester Baptist Church near Ackerman with Rev. Rob Faulk officiating. Interment was held at Chester Baptist Church Cemetery near Ackerman, MS. She passed away on July 3, 2013 after a long battle with cancer.
Ms. McClure was a native of Choctaw County and a Church Secretary. She was a 1948 graduate of Ackerman High School.

Survivors include her loving husband of 65 years, James R. McClure , two sons, Larry McClure (Patricia) and Terry McClure (Terri) all of Ackerman and 4 grandchildren, and 5 great grandchildren. One sister, Carolyn Bright Norman, (Bob) of Clinton and one special 99 year old Aunt, Mrs. Ella Staples of Ackerman.

Robert Lamar McClure

Robert Lamar McClure died July 8, 2013 after a long battle with cancer and heart disease. He was born April 24, 1925, in Ackerman, Mississippi to Ethel Robert McClure and Christine Weatherall McClure.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years Nancy Hamric McClure, his daughter Nancy Leah McClure, his son Stan McClure and wife Connie, all of Springdale, Arkansas and grandsons Robert McClure and wife Claire of Ft. Smith, Arkansas, and Brian McClure of Fayetteville, Arkansas. He is also survived by sisters Kay Wever of Yazoo City, Brenda Wise and husband Dan, Linda Tharp and husband Ben, Nita Connell and husband Jack, brother James McClure all of Ackerman, Mississippi, sisters-in-law Sammie McClure of Winona, Mississippi, Judy McClure of Jackson, Mississippi and also Libby and Al Owen of Ackerman, Mississippi and their families.

He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Nell King and Peggy McClure, and brothers Billy McClure and George Reginald McClure.

Following Robert's graduation from Ackerman High School, he served over two and half years in Europe during World War II. He was honorably discharged, receiving the Bronze Star and 8 battle stars. He received his B.S. degree from Mississippi State University in 1949, and later received his Charter Life Insurance Degree from the American College of Life Underwriters. His career of over 40 years was with the Mississippi Farm Bureau Insurance Companies in the Yazoo County area. In Yazoo City he was an active member of the First United Methodist Church and many other organizations. After his retirement he and his wife Nancy moved to Springdale, Arkansas to be near their children. He is a member of First United Methodist Church of Springdale. He will always be remembered for his love of family, fishing, hunting, and gardening.

Visitation will be from 1-3PM Thursday, July 11, 2013 at Coleman Funeral Home, HWY 12E P.O.Box 1065, Ackerman, Mississippi. Funeral service will follow the visitation beginning at 3PM.

Burial will be at Enon Cemetery following the service.

Joe Ed Curtis

Mr. Joe Ed Curtis, 65, died Friday, June 28, 2013, at his home in Louisville, MS, with his wife and caregiver by his side. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Sunday at First United Methodist Church, with Rev. Mike Childs and Rev. Bill Taylor officiating. Interment will be in Enon Cemetery in Ackerman, MS. Visitation will be held from 5:00 until 8:00 P.M. Saturday at the funeral home. Porter Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Curtis was born December 15, 1947, in French Camp, MS, but had resided in Louisville for the past 37 years. He was a graduate of Ackerman High School and Mississippi State University. He was an insurance salesman for American Public Life Insurance Company, and a faithful member of Louisville First United Methodist Church, where he taught the Discipleship Sunday School class. Mr. Curtis was also an avid MSU football fan, and was greatly respected throughout the community.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Hazel Box Curtis Coleman and Robert Warren Curtis; his stepfather, Robert Coleman; and a brother, Robert Curtis.

He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Gloria Burris Curtis of Louisville, his daughter, Mary Katherine Curtis Stewart (Tim) of Flora, MS; his son, Christopher “Clay” Curtis of Tupelo, MS; a sister, Charlotte Curtis Taylor (Bill); a brother, Tommy Curtis (Debby); and his 3 grandchildren, Peyton Curtis Stewart, Emily Katherine Stewart, and Kendall Grace Stewart; and his mother-in-law, Adelyne Burris.

Pallbearers will be Paul Simmons, Buster Moody, Billy Pearson, J.L. Pierce, Donny Todd, Tim Smith, Lucius Burris, and Charles Curtis.

Charlene Senter Glasgow

Charlene Senter Glasgow, 96, entered into rest on Thursday, April 18, 2013, wife of the late Thomas Rawles Glasgow. Charlene graduated from Itawamba Junior College and taught school and music lessons before meeting and marrying her beloved Tom. Later she established and taught one of the first kindergartens in the area. She was also director of the Appalachian project which established home daycare services to prepare preschool children for learning in three area counties. She was a long time member of Ackerman Methodist Church where she taught Sunday School and chaired and volunteered with many committees and organizations. She was a charter member of The 20th Century Club and a long time member of her beloved Bridge club.


She was born in Fulton, Ms. To the late Alfred Richard Senter and Maudena Sheffield Senter. She is also predeceased by her sister Bessie Googe and her brother Patrick Senter. Both of Fulton, MS.
She is survived by her sister Sue Wiygul of Fairfax, Va.; And also her children, Roselyn G. Bryant of Evans, Ga; Felicia G. Butler and husband, Nate of Riverview, Fla; Dr. Thomas S. Glasgow and wife, Ann, of Oxford, Ms; and Dr. Richard M. Glasgow of Slidell, La. Eleven grandchildren and seventeen great grandchildren.

Funeral services well be held in the Chapel of Coleman Funeral Home at 11:00 am on Wednesday, April 24th The family will receive friends the hour before the services at 10:00 am to celebrate her long life and wonderful friendships. Coleman Funeral Home of Ackerman is in charge of all arrangements.

Robert Moffitt, “Bubba” Thompson

Robert Moffitt, “Bubba” Thompson, 82, died Monday, April 8, 2013 at North MS Medical Center. Robert was born June 25, 1930 in Choctaw County, MS to John Leland Thompson, Sr. and Alma Moffitt Thompson . Bubba grew up in Choctaw Co., was a graduate of Ackerman High School and continued his education at Delta State University earning his BA in Education. He later received his Masters in Education from Mississippi State University. Additional academic pursuits included work toward a Ph. D from the University of Mississippi. Robert taught for 4 years in Ackerman. He moved to Tupelo in 1961 and spent 30 years as a history and social studies teacher and junior high coach at Milam Junior High before retiring in 1991. The last 10 years was spent as Principal. Principal Thompson devoted his life to public education where he doted over his teachers and uplifted and encouraged his students. He loved the outdoors, enjoying hunting, fishing, working in his yard and flowers and was an avid reader of the newspaper. 

A patriotic American, he served his country in the U. S. Army in France during the post-World War II era. Robert was a longtime active member of First Presbyterian Church in Tupelo where he was a former elder and loved the church music program.

Robert is survived by his wife of 52 years, Chris Thompson of Tupelo; two children, Bob Thompson (fiancĂ©, Meridith Perry) of Baldwyn and Joy T. Dowdy of Sommerville, AL; two sisters, Camille McGeachy (Sandy) of Charlotte, NC and Rosemary Scott of Baltimore, MD; two grandchildren, Mackenzie Christine Dowdy and Alexander “Zander” David Dowdy; a host of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother – John Leland Thompson, Jr.

Gladys Edwards

Gladys Melton Ingram Edwards, born on April 20, 1920 went home peacefully on February 10, 2013 at the Brandon Nursing and Rehabilitation Center after a lengthy illness. A memorial service will be held at the Wright and Ferguson Funeral Home on High Street in Jackson on Wednesday, February 13, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. Visitation will be from 9:30am to 11:00am at the funeral home with Rev. Buddy Smith and Rev. Stewart Moody officiating. 

Gladys was born in Choctaw County, MS and was raised in Ackerman, MS. She worked for the Mississippi State Department of Vocational Rehabilitation for many years, retiring in 1982. She lived in the MS Delta for 20 years in Leland and Greenville and moved to Jackson in 1961. She was an active leader in the Southern Baptist Women's Missionary Union and for over fifty years taught adult Sunday School at Calvary Baptist Church in Greenville and Daniel Memorial Baptist Church in Jackson. During her 92 years she ministered to and touched the lives of many people.

She was preceded in death by her parents James Thomas Melton and Sylvester Blanche Murphy, ten brothers and sisters, her first husband Fred Houston Ingram, and her second husband James P. Edwards. She is survived by her brother Thomas Melton of Heber Springs, AR; her son Dr. Fred Houston Ingram (Maridel) of Jackson, MS; her daughter Sylvia Ingram Thornton (Doug) of Brandon, MS; granddaughters Julie Moody (Stewart) of Statesboro, GA and Jodie Allen (Jeremy) of Brandon, MS; grandsons John Ingram of Jackson, MS, Kyle Thornton (Timberly) of Charlotte, NC, Kelly Thornton (Brittany) of Little Rock, AR; and four great grandchildren.

Burial will be 3:30pm at the Greenlawn Memorial Gardens in Greenville, MS. Memorials may be made to the Annie Armstong Easter offering at Daniel Memorial Baptist Church, 3784 Terry Road, Jackson, MS 39212.

Barbara DaleGammill Pogue

Funeral services for Barbara Dale Pogue, 67, were held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, February 6, 2013 with Rev Ed Saunders officiating. Burial followed in Antioch Methodist Church Cemetery.

A resident of Ackerman, MS, Mrs. Pogue, was a Teacher and Personal Care Home Worker. She died Sunday, February 3, 2013 at Baptist Memorial Hospital Golden Triangle, Columbus, MS.

Survivors include husband, Edward Pogue of Ackerman, MS; sons, Joey Miller of Jasper, FL; Devion Pogue of Ackerman, MS; father, Jessie Gammill of Ackerman, MS; brothers, Wesley Gammill of Ackerman, MS; Wilson Gammill of Coker, AL; sisters, Martha Adams, Anacortes, WA; Juanita Harding of Petal, MS. She also had 2 grandchildren.

Hubert Hulon Pinnix

Hubert Hulon Pinnix, 87, passed away February 6, 2013 at OCH Regional Medical Center in Starkville, MS. He was born and lived in Choctaw County. He was a veteran of WW II and served in the European Theatre. His infantry unit participated in the Battle of the Bulge and Ardennes Forest.

Hulon was a farmer, forester, and retired supervisor for Babcock and Wilcox. During retirement he raised and marketed pond raised channel catfish.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Joe Lovick Pinnix, Sr. and Clara Love Pinnix; three brothers, Joe Lovick Pinnix, Jr. of Mathiston, MS, Coy Pinnix of Beaumont, TX, and Paul Caldwell of Salt Rock, W. Virginia.

He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Reba Doris Reed Pinnix of Mathiston; two sons, Phil Pinnix (Bobbye) of Port Gibson, MS, and Barney Pinnix (Pam) of Boise, Idaho; brother, Jimmie Pinnix of Grenada, MS; sisters, Opal McAdams and Annette Shipley, both of Memphis, TN; seven grandchildren, numerous great grandchildren, and several great great grandchildren.

Visitation for Mr. Pinnix is scheduled for Friday, February 8, 2013 from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at Welch Funeral Home in Starkville, MS. Funeral services are scheduled for Saturday, February 9, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. at Blythe Creek Baptist Church in Mathiston, MS. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Billy D. McClure

Funeral services for Billy D. McClure of Winona, formerly of Corinth, will be at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, November 28, at First Baptist Church in Winona, with Dr. Chris Aldridge and Rev. T. R. Darsey officiating. Burial will follow in Enon Cemetery at Ackerman, with military honors.Visitation will be Tuesday, November 27, from 5:00 until 8:00 p.m., at Oliver Funeral Home.

Mr. McClure died of heart failure at University Medical Center in Jackson on Sunday, November 25. He was 84 years old. Mr. McClure was the son of the late Ethel and Christine Weatherall McClure of Ackerman.

Mr. McClure was a 1946 graduate of Ackerman High School and a former quarterback for Holmes Junior College where he graduated after 2 years. He was a US Army veteran of the Korean War and finished his education at Mississippi State after serving in the military. He was a retired FHA agent and worked in insurance sales prior to working with the FHA. He was a former member of Tate Baptist Church in Corinth where he served as a deacon and chairman of deacons several times, a Sunday School teacher and was active with the youth. He always showed a sense of humor, was an avid fisherman, bird hunter and enjoyed playing tennis. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Winona.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Tootsie (Dorothy Ferguson) McClure; sisters, Peggy McClure and Mary Nell King; brother, Reggie McClure; and stepdaughter, Patti Michelle Finley.

Virginia P. Carlisle

Virginia P. Carlisle, 94, went to be with the Lord on January 9, 2013. Funeral services will be held at Coleman Funeral Home in Ackerman, MS, on January 12, 2013, at 11:00 AM, with visitation preceding the service at 10:00 AM. Reverend Alex Coblentz will be officiating. Interment will follow the service at Enon Cemetery.

She was born on December 23, 1918, in French Camp, Mississippi, and was received into the Weir Presbyterian Church in August of 1927 by the late L.A. Beckman, Jr. Mrs. Carlisle lived in Ackerman but was a lifelong resident of Choctaw County. She was a member of French Camp Presbyterian Church.

A beloved homemaker, Mrs. Carlisle was also a poet and an historian. Mrs. Carlisle privately published poetry books and a historical record of Choctaw County titled Ye Olde Scrapbook: A Portrait of Choctaw County before the World Changed. Mrs. Carlisle was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. She loved nature and was an avid gardener.

Mrs. Carlisle was preceded in death by her parents, William F. Patterson and Snowflake Bowie Patterson; her brother, Wallace Patterson, her husband, Jack B. Carlisle, and her daughter, Virginia Ann Carlisle.

She is survived by her sister, Mary Lee Bowen of Jackson, MS, her daughter Jacquelyn (Steve) Evans of Blairsville, GA, her son William T. Carlisle (Vickki) of Ackerman, MS; her grandchildren, Scott (Edie) Evans, Kimberly (Craig) Coghlan, Jack Carlisle, and Leslie Evans; her great grandson, Will Evans, and nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers will be Scott Evans, Jack Carlisle, Craig Coghlan, Kenny Clark, Billy Prewitt, and Larry Littlejohn. Honorary pallbearers will be Dennis Dobbs, Donald Nunn, Lewis Ward, John Robert Cockrell, T.L. Bowie, and James Neal Henderson.

Though she will be deeply missed by all who knew her, Mrs. Carlisle’s family celebrates her homecoming with the Lord and the family who preceded her into the kingdom of heaven. Her enchanting smile, persistent determination, and loving nature will live on in the many memories her family holds dear.

Joyce Hathorn Kendricks (Former Teacher at AHS)

Mrs. Joyce Hathorn Kendricks, 75, died on Sunday, November 4, 2012 at her home in Oxford, MS. The funeral service will be held on Wednesday, November 7, 2012 at 1:00 P.M. in Waller Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Robert Allen officiating. The graveside service will follow in Oxford Memorial Cemetery in Oxford, MS. Visitation will be held Wednesday, November 7, 2012 at Waller Funeral Home from 11:00 A.M. until service time at 1:00 P.M.

Mrs. Kendricks was a loving mother and wife. Born in Oxford, MS on July 31, 1937, to the late N.C. Hathorn and Hazel Miles Hathorn - who were public school teachers in several North Mississippi schools the latest of which was Durant, MS. Her father also served several terms as superintendent of the Holmes County School District. Joyce graduated from Durant High School in 1955 and attended the University of Mississippi before transferring to Delta State University where she received a teaching degree in Business Education. She taught business classes to high school students in Ruleville and Coahoma County high schools. After retiring from teaching in 1996, she moved from Clarksdale to Oxford. She became a member of the First Baptist Church of Oxford after a long membership in Oakhurst Baptist Church of Clarksdale.

She is survived by her husband, Sam G. Kendricks (also a retired public school teacher) of Oxford, MS; a daughter, Angel Kendricks of Oxford, MS; two sons, Samuel Barr Kendricks and his wife, Susan of Gulfport, MS and Scott K. Kendricks and his wife, Marni of Oxford, MS; and seven grandchildren.

Thomas Mansfield "Tommy" Pullen (Former Teacher at AHS)

Thomas Mansfield "Tommy" Pullen, age 73, of Columbus, MS, passed away October 24, 2012, at Druid City Hospital in Tuscaloosa, AL. Funeral services will be Saturday, October 27, 2012, at 2:00 PM at Gunter & Peel Chapel with Rev. Todd Core officiating. The interment will immediately follow at Friendship Cemetery. Visitation will be Saturday, October 27, 2012, from 1:00 PM until 2:00 PM at Gunter & Peel Funeral Home.

Mr. Pullen was born March 27, 1939, in Columbus, MS, to the late Sanford Mansfield and Mary Agnes Pullen. He was a graduate of Lee High School and Mississippi State University where he received his undergraduate and masters degrees. Mr. Pullen taught history for many years, first in Ackerman, MS, then in Greenville, MS, where he retired. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Columbus, MS.

Survivors include his brothers, James Pullen and his wife Melinda of Columbus, MS, and Sanford "Bubba" Pullen and his wife Mary of Columbus, MS, and several nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers will be Jimmy Pullen, Austin Dison, Scott Collins, Joe Price, Mike Perkerson, and Walter Perrigin.

Dr. Floyd Lamar Lummus

Dr. Floyd Lamar Lummus, 77, of Tupelo, died Sunday, Oct. 21, 2012, at Sanctuary Hospice House in Tupelo. Dr. Lummus was born July 21, 1935 in Weir, and began loving and following Christ Jesus at the age of seven.

He was a graduate of Ackerman High School, Mississippi College and the University of Mississippi Medical Center; he completed a medical internship at St. Thomas Hospital, Nashville, Tenn. He served in the United States Navy from 1961-1964, then completed his medical residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Mississippi Medical Center, Jackson, and at Ochsner Foundation Hospital, New Orleans, La. He began his practice of Internal Medicine with Dr. Antone Tannehill in Tupelo in 1967.

In 1977, Dr. Lummus and fellow physicians, Dr. Antone Tannehill, Dr. Bill Wood and Dr. Eugene Murphy, formed Internal Medicine Associates (IMA), which was eventually sold to North Mississippi Medical Clinics (NMMC) in the early 1990s. Dr. Lummus was selected NMMC Physician of the Year in 1981, and was a member of the NMMC medical staff from 1967 until 2006, a 39-year career of service to the medical community of Tupelo.

He held a deep commitment to His Savior and served Harrisburg Baptist Church, Tupelo, as a Sunday School teacher, deacon chairman, and Finance and Building Committee member. He also served as chairman of the medical staff at North Mississippi Medical Center, was president of the Northeast Mississippi Medical Society, a member of the Mississippi State Medical Association, American Medical Association, American College of Physicians, American Society of Internal Medicine, American College of Cardiology, as well as a Board of Trustees member at Blue Mountain College.

A celebration of his life will be held 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 26, 2012, at the Jefferson Street Chapel of W.E. Pegues with the Rev. David Langerfeld and the Rev. Scott Little officiating. A eulogy will be given by Dr. Bill Hilbun. Interment will be at Tupelo Memorial Park.

A loving and faithful husband and father, he is survived by his wife of 54 years, Jeanette Moak Lummus of Tupelo; son, Dr. Allan Lummus (Connie) of Memphis, Tenn.; daughters, Dr. Jill Lummus of West Hollywood, Calif., and Neece Little (Scott) of Madison; and grandchildren, Max Diamond Lummus, Luke Little and Jordan Little.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Irene Husband Lummus and Floyd Alvaro Lummus.

Pallbearers are Dr. Alan Flowers, Charlie Greer, Allan Kent, John Smith, Lee Thornton and Bill Yarbrough. Honorary pallbearers are members of the Kilgo Sunday School Class at Harrisburg Baptist Church.

Visitation will be Thursday, Oct. 25, from 4 to 7 p.m. at W.E. Pegues Funeral Home in Tupelo.
